Finding the Narrative

These past two weeks have been about the content for me. Finding the right content to fulfill my goal of talking and denormalizing sexist behaviors.

Calling it out. Making it known. Not feeling ashamed.

I think that’s a huge part of the wicked problem of gender equality and sexism; the shame that accompanies victims.

The mentality of victim blaming and prosecution. The mentality of not believing those who have come forward in the past. The mentality of rape culture and “asking for it”.

I want my narrative to include these instances of normalized, seemingly harmless sexism in the service industry and how they contribute to larger scale issues including unfair treatment, violence towards women, and rape culture.

Violence towards women begins with these seemingly harmless comments and actions and is perpetuated through our attitudes and thought processes. I want my motion piece to draw people in initially, giving a humorous contrast of vintage graphic elements and modern scenarios, showing the absurd nature of sexism today.

Then, by stripping away the humor, presenting statistics on how far we’ve really come since 1950, 1960 will bring a real world, in your face, no sugar coating realness. These statistics will include percentage of female identifying CEOs (18%), college rape victims (1/4 women on campus), percentage of rapists who get away with their crime (99%), among other facts that serve to make the audience feel disgusted and shocked.

Keeping this narrative in mind, I would like to use digital photo collage techniques with motion elements to emphasize and keep the audience engaged throughout the storytelling process.

Now, I feel the need to dive more into the story and content and start putting together initial sketches and forms studies of the collages.
